Aufgaben
  • Are you interested in getting involved in R&D in a dynamic and creative environment?
  • Are you interested to help shape the future of vehicle diagnostics of all upcoming Mercedes-Benz carlines?
  • Are you interested in software development?
  • Are you interested in an internship with a potential follow up thesis?

Then you've come to the right place!

Within the Software Update and Diagnosis research and development division, our team is focusing on vehicle diagnostic development. One of the tasks is to develop diagnostic software components in-house as embedded software inside the Electronic Control Units (ECUs) which are responsible for the major diagnostic functionality of the vehicle. As there are multiple ECUs in the vehicle, we emphasize using standards from ISO, AUTOSAR or ASAM for standard diagnostic technologies such as UDS or SOVD.

With increasing requirements on ECUs for high performance functionalities, the requirements for diagnostics are changing. The new diagnostic communication paradigm “SOVD” is therefore coming into place to fulfill these requirements. Since SOVD was initially released by ASAM in 2022, the standard is very new and multiple questions remain to resolve to implement SOVD in ECUs. One of these open questions is how the software update mechanism can be improved by using SOVD instead of common diagnostic communication protocols.

We offer you an internship for 6 months with a potential follow up thesis in a dynamic and creative environment at R&D and the opportunity to help shape the future of vehicle diagnostics of all upcoming Mercedes-Benz carlines.

The tasks of the internship (and potentially follow up theses) are as follows:

  • The investigation and comparison of existing software update strategies established in computer science
  • The theoretical evaluation and gap analysis in automotive standards in comparison to previous investigations
  • Investigation of strategies for updating a µC inside an AUTOSAR Adaptive ECU
  • Developing a technical solution to establish a software update mechanism which meets high performance requirements in the automotive context. This includes creating a reference environment and software architecture of the system
  • Experimental implementation of a PoC of the developed software architecture in the defined reference environment
  • Experimental porting of an existing Update component from one ECU to another
  • A life cycle management proposal of automotive software using the developed approach as well as the pros and cons of this life cycle
  • Finally, a concept on the necessary scope of testing to ensure the functionality of the software update sequence
  • This includes examining the possible testing tools on the market with internal experts, suppliers and open source solutions

To summarize, the tasks provide hands-on experiences in multiple fields of Software Engineering and give you insides in the day-to-day work as an automotive software developer.

As the topic is quite new and requires some decent amount of internal research and knowledge, we propose to combine this as an internship with follow up thesis. The final topic of a thesis can be determined during the internship in consultation with the university, you and us.
